Understanding Your IRS Notice
IRS Notice Numbers and ExplanationsBelow are some of the notices you may have
received from the IRS. For a detailed explanation, click the
link below.
Example 1: The CP:23 at the top of the first page identifies this sample as a CP 23.
Example 2: Both the 09 in the top right corner and the CP09 to the right of the "Notice Number" text on the first page identify this sample as a CP 09.
The last page of a notice often includes a tear-off stub at the bottom. This stub is for the recipient to return with their payment or correspondence. The left-hand side of the stub contains information including the notice number and codes that identify variable paragraphs that are included, such as math error descriptions and penalty explanations.
Example 3:
The 23 printed to the left and just below the
IRS return address on the tear-off stub identifies this sample
as a CP 23.
